Why an EPC (GiroCode) QR code

Paying an invoice by bank transfer means typing a 22-character IBAN, a name and a reference — the classic source of misdirected payments. An EPC QR code, known in Germany and Austria as GiroCode, contains the complete SEPA transfer: beneficiary, IBAN, an optional amount in euros, BIC and payment reference. Payers point their banking app at it and simply approve the transfer. All of it is stored in the pattern itself, so the code needs no connection to us and cannot be edited after printing.

  • The banking app fills in beneficiary, IBAN, amount and reference, so nothing is retyped.
  • The IBAN checksum is verified before the code is created, catching typing errors early.
  • Leave the amount empty for donations or open bills, or fix it for an exact invoice.
  • No servers and no expiry: the code keeps working for as long as the account exists.

Freelance and small-business invoices

A code in the payment section spares clients from typing the IBAN and the invoice number by hand.

Utility and service bills

Water, energy and telecom providers print one code per bill with the exact amount and customer reference.

Club and association fees

Annual membership invoices carry the code with the member number as the payment reference.

Donations

Leaving the amount blank on a charity flyer lets each donor decide how much to give.

Courses and events paid by transfer

Registration confirmations include the code, so participants pay the fee in one step.

EPC QR Code Generator — SEPA Transfers (GiroCode)

Enter the beneficiary name and IBAN, then add an optional euro amount, BIC and payment reference. From these fields the generator assembles an EPC069-12 payment block, the format Germany knows as GiroCode, and draws it as the QR pattern.

What is this QR code?

The EPC QR code was defined by the European Payments Council for SEPA credit transfers. A banking app that supports it fills in the transfer form from one scan, and the payer only confirms. All transfer data sits in the printed pattern, so a new IBAN, amount or reference needs a newly generated code.

Best use cases

  • ✓Invoices and payment reminders in euros.
  • ✓Rent, membership and tuition fees with a fixed reference.
  • ✓Club fees and donations collected by bank transfer.
  • ✓Order confirmations for customers who pay in advance.

How to generate your QR code

1

Type the beneficiary exactly as the account holder name appears at the bank.

2

Enter the IBAN; spaces are fine, and a wrong check digit is flagged straight away.

3

Fill in an amount in euros for a fixed bill, or skip it so payers decide the sum.

4

Before printing, open your own banking app, choose scan to pay and check every field it fills in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which banking apps can scan an EPC QR code?

Many banking apps in the euro area, including most banks in Germany, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands, read the code from their scan or transfer screen. Support varies by bank, so test the code in your own app first.

What happens after the payer scans?

The bank app pre-fills a SEPA transfer with your name, IBAN, amount and reference. The payer reviews it and authorises the payment as usual.

Why are there no scan statistics?

The scan goes straight from the image to the banking app without visiting QR Global, so there is nothing to count. That is also why details cannot be edited after printing.

What is the difference between EPC and GiroCode?

GiroCode is the name German and Austrian banks use for the EPC069-12 format of the European Payments Council. The data inside is the same, so any app that supports one supports the other.

Can I use it for payments in other currencies?

No. The standard covers SEPA credit transfers in euros, so the amount field is always EUR.

Is the BIC required?

No. Within SEPA the IBAN is enough, so without a BIC the generator uses version 002 of the format, where it is optional. Add it only if your bank asks for it.

Is there a length limit for the reference?

Yes, 140 characters of free text. Keep it to the invoice or customer number so it fits on the payer's statement.

Is there an upper limit for the amount?

The standard allows from 0.01 to 999,999,999.99 euros. The payer's bank applies its own transfer limits on top.

What does the payer see after scanning?

Their bank's transfer screen with beneficiary, IBAN, amount and reference already filled in. They can enter or adjust the amount where your code left it open, then authorise the payment as usual.
