Why a GS1 Digital Link QR code
A product usually carries a barcode for the till and, separately, a QR code for shoppers, and the pack runs out of space. A GS1 Digital Link QR does both jobs. It holds the product's GTIN inside a web address, so checkout scanners that support GS1 Digital Link read the product number, while a phone camera opens your product page. Add a batch or lot, a serial number and an expiry date if you need them. The address runs through QR Global, so scans are counted and the destination page can change later without new packaging.
- One code for the till and for the shopper: the GTIN for scanners, your product page for phones.
- Batch, serial number and expiry date can be part of the code for recalls and fresh-food rotation.
- The GTIN check digit is verified before saving, so a typo does not end up on thousands of packs.
- The product page can change after printing, and every scan appears in the code analytics.
Food and drink packaging
Shoppers see ingredients, allergens and recipes, while the expiry date in the code helps rotate stock.
Cosmetics and household goods
The pack opens usage instructions and safety data in the shopper's language.
Electronics and spare parts
A serial number in the code links to manuals, warranty registration and firmware updates.
Pharmacy and medical supplies
Batch numbers support recalls, and the page carries the current patient information leaflet.
Wine and spirits
A back label leads to tasting notes and the winery story without crowding the design.

GS1 Digital Link QR Code Generator
Enter the product page URL and the GTIN from your barcode, plus an optional batch, serial number or expiry date. The QR encodes a GS1 Digital Link URI with your GTIN, so one symbol serves both the till and the customer.
What is this QR code?
GS1 Digital Link is the GS1 standard for putting product identifiers in a web address. Retailers are moving checkouts to 2D barcodes as part of GS1's Sunrise 2027, and a dynamic QR lets you change the destination page without reprinting packaging.
Best use cases
- ✓Packaging that needs one code for the checkout and for product information.
- ✓Batch-level recalls, care instructions and expiry details.
- ✓Product pages that you want to update without reprinting labels.
How to generate your QR code
Enter the product page URL.
Add the GTIN printed under your barcode.
Optionally add batch, serial number and expiry date.
Download the code and test it with a phone and a 2D-capable scanner.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I get a GTIN?
GTINs are licensed by GS1 member organisations. Use the number already assigned to your product; we only check its format and check digit.
Will older checkouts read it?
Only scanners that read 2D barcodes do. Keep the linear barcode on pack until your retailers confirm 2D support.
Can I change where the code leads?
Yes. The product page behind the code can be replaced at any time. Changing the GTIN, batch or serial number, however, produces a new image.
Which product numbers are supported?
GTIN-8, GTIN-12, GTIN-13 and GTIN-14 with a valid check digit. Shorter numbers are padded to 14 digits inside the link, as the GS1 standard requires.
Will every checkout read this code?
Only scanners and point-of-sale software that support GS1 Digital Link. Many retailers are still moving from linear barcodes, so keep the classic barcode on the pack during the transition.
What do batch, serial and expiry add?
They are written into the link as GS1 attributes: batch or lot, serial number and expiry date. Systems that understand GS1 Digital Link can read them; shoppers simply open your page.
Why does the link start with the QR Global domain?
GS1 Digital Link allows any web domain in front of the product number. Using the QR Global address is what lets scans be counted and the destination be changed later.
Do I need a GS1 membership?
To get a GTIN for your own products, yes: barcodes are issued by your national GS1 organisation. The QR code itself can be created for any valid GTIN you already have.
